The Hepworth Wakefield
is currently staging the first comprehensive exhibition to explore the enduring influence of India – a country to which he returned every winter for fifty years - on Howard Hodgkin
On display are some 35 works which reflect the colour and warmth of India and his enduring love of the country - from blazing sunsets to monsoons, landscapes, and portraits of people he met. It will include paintings that have never been exhibited in the UK before, ranging from Hodgkin’s earliest India-inspired paintings of the 1960s through to new works completed shortly before his death.
There will also be personal photographs and documents on display including his journals and rarely seen photographs and documents from Hodgkin’s personal archive. These will be shown alongside works from the artist’s personal collection of Indian art, which he began early in his career and which first inspired Hodgkin to visit the country.
On 5th July the Hepworth Wakefield was nominated as the winner of the Art Fund Museum of the Year.Howard Hodgkin: Painting India
