Polly Apfelbaum is best known for her large-scale floor installations. These consist of hundreds of pieces of velvet, hand-dyed in a palette of eye-popping colours and hues and arranged in sprawling configurations on the ground. She describes her work as existing in a space between painting, sculpture, and installation.
Apfelbaum's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Milton Keynes Gallery, the Institute for Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, the Yellowstone Art Museum, Montana, the Carlow Visual Center for Contemporary Art, Ireland, and the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis.
Her work is in many public collections, including the Museum of Modern of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
